A leather jacket can last for many years with basic care. These steps work for most smooth leather jackets. Always check the care label and the product description first, because suede, nubuck and waxed leather need different treatment.
Clean it gently
Wipe the surface with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove dust and light marks. Avoid soaking the leather or using household cleaners, which can dry and stain it. For heavy marks, use a cleaner made for leather and test it on a hidden area first.
Condition it once or twice a year
Apply a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth, work it in with light circular strokes, then leave the jacket to rest for a few hours. Conditioning keeps the leather supple and reduces cracking, especially at the elbows and collar.
Keep it away from heat and damp
If your jacket gets wet, let it dry naturally at room temperature on a hanger. Do not use a hairdryer, radiator or direct sunlight, because heat can shrink and stiffen leather.
Store it properly
- Use a wide, shaped hanger so the shoulders keep their form.
- Store it in a breathable garment bag, not plastic.
- Leave some space in the wardrobe so the leather is not crushed.
Special finishes
Suede and nubuck should be brushed with a suede brush and treated with a protector spray. Waxed leather can be refreshed with a suitable wax. Shearling and sheepskin should be aired out and professionally cleaned when needed.
